What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

Nice gym. It’s clean and comfortable and the training equipment is enough. Also, there are showers for bath after you bouldering. The terrains are also interesting for many nice funny routes setting. But It would be better if the gym can set more dynamic routes that need dyno or running to jump together with some coordination moves then is perfect 👍🏽

I'm very new to bouldering and this is the second gym I've been to. I love the no pressure sales, the friendly staff, and the facilities. I I am so thankful the 2-week trial. It gives you a great foundation with the free class, and access to yoga classes and equipment rental.

Really fun bouldering gym! The setting is great and very varied, lots of stuff at different skill levels and with a variety of skills used. The person at the front desk, Sugar, was super friendly and got me squared away quickly. I went on a weekday afternoon and it wasn’t too busy. Definitely recommend!

this is my favorite climbing gym! It’s super clean and NEVER packed like some other gyms in the area. The routes are challenging, and feel like a fun puzzle. While people bring friends and chat, it feels more like an actual gym where people are focused on sending climbs/casually climbing.

This is one of the best climbing sites I've been to abroad! The problems were fun, the space was spacious, the walls were varied, and I also liked that the locker had a digital key. There are weights and an aerobic zone, so it's great for a cool-down workout👍 I'm going again today.

Hands down best setting in the greater Seattle area. Staff are fun and friendly; this contributes so much to a welcoming atmosphere. Gym (and holds for that matter) is kept immaculate. Fun community too when it gets "crowded". Do yourself a favor and come climb here.

First time bouldering at Momentum Indoor Climbing, and it was a fantastic experience! The staff was friendly and made the introduction to safe climbing quick and educational. The facility was clean, well-ventilated, and offered extensive options for learning how to boulder on your own. Highly recommend for beginners and experienced climbers alike!

Great gym. Really appreciate the variety of routes, how clean and modern it is (especially compared to SBP), how it's never packed (again, SBP), and the natural light. I love that the cardio equipment is in a separate room so you're not breathing chalk. Their huge yoga studio is a plus too. I wish the weight area had more machines and equipment, especially an assisted pull-up machine. I'd also love if they offered group fitness classes. I used to climb at Movement Crystal City and they had fantastic 30 min core classes that they did in the yoga studio and a 30 min total body class that they did in the weight area. If Momentum started offering those and improved the weight area equipment, I'd consider becoming a member instead of using punch passes. Also, they desperately need to replace their yoga mats. I’ve done a lot of yoga classes and have never used mats that smelled so bad/were so dirty.EDIT: Apparently they replaced their yoga mats in May 2024. I last took a class just before that. Glad they have new mats!

The staff here are friendly. They have Groupon regularly. I am a fan of this place.I found the place well vented ( no strong feet smell). The place also had a hand washing station outside of the restrooms. There was hand sanitizer located in multiple places. There are lockers ( make a password) and cubbies on the gym floor. The gym area is in the back corner. There is a cardio room. The parking lot is a one way, I found it a little tight.

Really fun gym! Has great routes with a wide variety in skill level. They always have at least one slab climb too which is awesome. Climbers here are really nice and children aren't allowed to be disruptive or unruly unlike other gyms I've been to. Membership benefits are great as well, far better than I've seen anywhere else, especially with renewing guest passes. Definitely a great place to call a home gym.

Love this place! Great to also have a weightlifting area. I like the rotation of routes. Just long enough to master some before being presented with new challenges. Love the diversity of routes and layout of the place. The staff are extra amazing and knowledgeable. I have enjoyed the classes I've taken and have come a long ways in just a year! Really loved the in-house competition and hope there is another one coming!

Had a great time at this gym. I picked Momentum to visit on vacation amongst the sea of Seattle climbing gyms because they had a Groupon. My partner and I visited on a weekday morning and it was super quiet, only maybe 10-15 people in the whole gym plus some summer camp kids. The gym isn't huge, but had a good variety of wall types and styles of climbs. I thought the grading was a bit inconsistent but the setting was fun so I didn't really care. I particularly enjoyed the top out boulders, which I haven't had much experience with. Everything was super clean and the grimy foot smell typical to climbing gyms was minimal. The weightlifting and cardio areas were also spacious and well equipped for both climbing-specific and more general strength workouts. They had a huge selection of bands and even had two 15kg barbells, a rare find.

We had a great first climbing experience! The walls were suitable for beginners and they offer routes for advanced climbers as well. The facility was large, clean and not too crowded when we went at 6-7pm on Tuesday. The only reason I gave four stars was because the man at the front desk was rude. Yelling at us to watch the video while the other front desk person was still checking us in, and gave me attitude when I asked for shoes…? I’m sorry I’m new here… I understand we all have bad days but that is not how you should treat paying customers.

Nice bouldering only gym, it is not the biggest but is big enough. The mats are quite firm, to a point where I felt uneasy topping out (which is about 1/3 of the gym) or climbing to the top of these walls . Many of the routes are 1-move wonders, which is not ideal. The routes tend to be more dynamic, lots of big moves. The workout area seems nice and a great place for exercise beyond climbing. It was extremely empty, talking to a few others it seems it never really gets busy, which is a huge plus (looking at you SBP). Overall, I enjoyed my day visit

Fantastic facilities, great climbs, plenty of free parking, super clean, not crowded. There's a study area, gym, climbing, showers, lockers - I can easily come and spend all day here. Only thing that can be improved is the customer service. I came here for the first time on Saturday, and the staff member that checked me in seemed so disinterested in sharing info - and just pointed me towards the video introduction on the tv.

We had a wonderful experience at Momentum. My husband, brother-in-law (experienced climbers) and I (a complete newbie) spent about two hours on a range of courses that were a great fit (and a fun challenge) for our whole group. The staff was friendly, the facility was well-maintained and comfortable, and the onboarding/welcome experience was simple and straightforward. Would recommend to anyone, for a fun day or a longer term membership.

I have many great things to say about this gym. The facility is spacious, clean, and very well maintained. More importantly, I feel as though the setting is top notch and very well thought out. I genuinely find it impressive that the setters (M & M) are able to put up such high quality problems week after week, and I know that a lot of the climbers that frequent the gym are very grateful to have access to such an amazing facility. I hope this gym continues to thrive and many thanks to the staff and setters for their hard work.

A clean and excellent facility, friendly staff, fun routes! I signed up the two-week pass that include the intro class, unlimited access in two weeks, and free rental shoes and chalk bags. Super affordable price.I've been to other place in town and it was crowded and smelly. Here I definitely had a great experience! The routes were not too crowded. For beginners, they also provided different styles routes. The routes were not too high, but were challenging enough for you do work out.Lastly, they value a lot to safety. The facility offers plenty safe down climbing anchors for beginners, and their routes are not very high compared to the other climbing facility in town. It helps a lot for me as a beginner.

Went to Momentum for the first time with my friend this evening and we had a wonderful time. As someone who works at a climbing gym, I was impressed by this gym. At the gym I work at there is a lot of yard sailing that happens (people bringing more stuff than they need with him into the climbing areas) and it kinda bothers me. Tonight, other climbers were very respectful and I saw no yard sailing at all. The mats seemed a little firm to me and I felt a little uncomfortable with the possibility of taking falls. Overall, a high quality bouldering gym that isn't too busy.

Great (fun and interesting) route setting. The gym is very clean with modern training tools and an exceptional fitness area. There's also plenty of parking, especially for an urban Seattle location. Best of all, they are not forcing the staff to continue the mask charade.I've climbed at all the local gyms and momentum is my favorite bouldering spot in Western Washington.

I spent almost 30 minutes speaking with the staff here before climbing. They were not only friendly but insightful. I found the place to be immaculately clean and well organized. As someone newer to bouldering, most of the routes were too difficult, but I found a few that were interesting and offered a healthy challenge. I highly recommend this place to any intermediate or advanced climbers and could tell they the more experienced climbers were having a good time. For beginners, Seattle Bouldering Project is a better place to start your journey.

No harnesses, bouldering only which is why 4 stars not 5. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Routes were diverse and had a wide range of difficulty(V0-V16) the workout area was great and it has rings! The prices are a bit steep considering there are no auto belays. 28$ for a day pass w/ rentals, but you know beginners can only climb for like 45min, if that, so I wish it was more affordable.

The staff are amazing in how they make you feel welcome. I find the rates to be reasonable and appreciate how they try to offer more deals compared to other gyms so more people can come in. I feel like my fingers get strengthened on their sets. One downside is the mats hold on to the chalk which sticks to your shoes and are stiffer than other gym's mats. However, I see staff cleaning them regularly to reduce the first issue. They have AC and are typically less crowded than other nearby gyms. I'm in love with the spray wall set!Overall, even though it's out of my way to go to this gym versus another I find it worthwhile for the experience.

This was my first time ever stepping into a climbing gym so I have nothing like that to compare it to. I have been to many gyms though. I had a great experience here! The person at the front desk was kind and helpful. If you are new to bouldering I highly recommend either working with their instructors or having a very experienced friend to guide you. This is not like many other indoor gym workouts where someone can set up your equipment real quick or give you a short few minutes explanation to get you going. It’s worth it though. The feeling you get when you actually reach the top of the wall is amazing (until you realize you have to climb back down, ha! But don’t worry they’ve got these cool rings for that!)If you’ve ever been curious about bouldering go to this place. Then go enjoy a beer at Seapine.

I went in today to work out. Said hello to the reception person who made eye contact saying nothing. I checked in and began working out. Halfway through the reception person approached me in the weight area and said I had to have a mask on. Before I could even put one on I asked if it was posted thinking I missed it when two other people started ragging on me for not wearing a mask. The staff person did nothing to de-escalate this.I just quietly collected my things since the employee did nothing to manage this public shaming. Upon walking out I noted the only sign was posted below the counter and not in any site line or on the door. Calmly and politely her why she said nothing as I checked in she said “i couldn’t tell you weren’t wearing a mask since you have facial hair”, I cannot believe that weak excuse. This gym supports public shaming and is not a safe place for me to work out.

Great small workout equipment set off in the corner. It has been forever since I climbed or bouldered, it was a great workout. I really liked the place. Parking was great and easily accessible. Rates are reasonable for a climbing gym of this size with an equipment set.Has a great hydration area and people understand routing and not to cross routes. It was very pleasant.
