What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

The routes where great it was a blast for me and my cousins, the desk staff Amber was super friendly and kind! With her top notch customerservice she got me hooked up with a 40$ 2 week trial! What a steal! It made it so 1 of my cousins could get in free! Well we where there I saw Amber going around making sure everyone was having a good time, she even took a few videos and pictures for us while we climbed. What an excellent employee I hope to see her when we come back! (Because we definitely will be back)

I love this place! The people are friendly and open and they put on really good music too. I love coming here to challenge my body and make friends. They have beginner climbs as well as a gym inside so you really can get a full body workout in. 5 stars. 🙂

Excellent facility. Route setting is very unique and fun, with both your traditional climbs and comp-style dynamic routes. Also great for kids, as there is a dedicated climbing area for young children on the second floor. Staff is always very friendly and willing to help with beta or anything else you need. Would highly recommend.

I had a good time climbing here. As of this post, some things were not in operation and being worked on. However, I enjoyed the things they had open as well as the small gym inside. My only complaint was there isn't a lot for people with less experience to stay for more than an hour

Best climbing gym that I've ever been to. Great route setting with clear delineation between routes due to their color scheme. Highly recommend a membership here.

Trevor invited our nonprofit Addict II Athlete to a night of climbing for our participants families. Our organization helps families heal from addiction and mental health issues by utilizing healthy recreation. Bouldering is a great way to do this and we couldn’t be more grateful for the experience. Thank you Trevor and Momentum we all had such a great night.

The kids had a good time, as a first timer, we didn't really know what to expect. The kids had to use bigger sized shoes, because they didn't have any available in their size. I would recommend taking your own if you have them.

We love Momentum’s youth clubs! The instructors are amazing and my kids always get a great workout. Recently we were late picking our son up because of car trouble, and when we arrived we found the instructor had spent one-on-one time teaching him while he waited. He went above and beyond and we were so thankful!

I stopped going a few years back because the routes weren't as interesting as other places like The Front, but I've started going again this year and they seem to have improved. The problems are usually pretty good with some very fun challenges. It's usually not too crowded and the variety of walls helps spread out the climbers.

This was our first time here, and it was fantastic! I brought my five kids (ages7-14) and they kept plenty busy climbing (and watching other climbers when they needed a rest) for about 1.5 hours. I myself also really enjoyed the challenge and fun of bouldering. We were treated very well by the accommodating staff and were given a bounce-back gift certificate, which we are excited to use!

Great place to climb. The routes are updated frequently enough that things stay interesting. There is a good mix of technical and dynamic boulders.

My kids (3 & 7) are involved with the youth climbing clubs. They love going each week and look forward to each session as it approaches. I'd like to give a shout out to both Coach Amber and Coach Courtney for being unbelievably talented with children and positivity. They are awesome examples for my kids! Highly recommend Momentum youth clubs!

A very fun place. First time going and I really enjoyed it. It can be quite expensive, both the single day and membership passes, but they often do discounts. I went during one of their free days. The walls were clearly marked and ranked from easy to hard. A lot of upper body and core strength is needed for the more difficult climbs. They do have a mini gym section with a bench and bars. The gym area is pretty small compared to their other locations.

Love this climbing gym! It’s big with lots of different routes. Fun energy. My only complaints are that it’s a little pricey with no student discounts, and the couple times I’ve called before getting a membership, I was given inaccurate information over the phone about pricing and how I can use my guest privileges. But other than that, love this gym!

We brought 4 children with a wide range of ages and skill levels. They all had a great time and wore themselves out! (Added bonus). They have already asked about going again.

It's pricey, but definitely worth the value - the facility is excellent. There's lots of wall but it can get busy. I would definitely recommend it though. There is no roping at this facility - bouldering only.

The guy at the desk was super nice and even let us get the shoe rental for free for my boyfriend birthday. It was seriously so nice. Had a lot of fun their too but definitely sore for sure. I love this place and will come back.

Possibly the best bouldering gym I've been to, and I’ve been to gyms in Austin, San Jose, Berkeley, Oakland, and Concord, CA. The climbing is top-notch and they change up the routes enough to keep things interesting but not so much that problems disappear before you get some work in. Climbers here aren’t very social though, if that’s what you’re into. Definitely a young crowd.
