What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • All visitors are required to fill out a waiver, including spectators.

  • Rope Climbers must be belay certified prior to climbing.

    • If you know how to belay, visit the Front Desk to get certified.

    • If you do not know how to belay, sign up for our Learn To Belay Class!

  • Lead Climbing requires a 35meter rope, certification, and ability to climb a 5.10 test route.

  • Exercise equipment use is first come first serve.

  • Climbing Shoes, Harness, and Belay Device rentals available at Front Desk.

    • We do not provide or rent out lead ropes.

-A huge assortment of beginner to advanced climbing options-Very open and airy with plenty of places to stash your gear-Comfy places to rest between climbs, which is especially helpful if you're making a day of it to get your money's worth.-As a beginner I enjoyed that they had some unique, creative and challenging V1s, like having to take a running start to reach the first hold. My only wish was that they had some auto belay routes too, sadly not yet.

A very nice gym. I'm giving 4 stars because of the lead test - I failed the belaying part, because of using the tunneling method.I understand the policy about it, and respect that. It just made the experience suboptimal for me, since I couldn't climb the cool-looking big wall with my climbing partner. You can only redo the test on the next visit. I'm visiting the city from overseas, so that doesn't really help.It just sucks a bit, to be proficient in belaying, have good eye on the rope management and all (the person overlooking the test said that) and then at the very end of the test being told "everything was perfect, just one thing, you used the wrong method, so you can't pass the test today".I get that the tests are in a way picky, and stimulate people to really remember the mistakes, it just doesn't feel nice to experience it, when that's your last time in the gym.I'm writing it here if it maybe helps someone else to avoid the situation, and for the gym, mentioning the belaying method would make the difference for me. (Of course attending the training would make me know it, but for people from elsewhere in the world that would be helpful.)The 2 week trial pass is a really good idea especially for visitors to the city.

Great climbing gym. They've got a large bouldering section with a good variety of climbs (slab, cave, comp, etc). Their lead section is great. There's speed climbing for people who are into that sort of thing. There isn't a ton of top rope options, but enough to get you going and get you stoked on lead climbing.

There are not enough lower grade (9, 10a, 10B) lead routes on the longer walls for people who are recovering from injuries. Please put up some 9/10a routes next to the speed wall, by the belay test and in the back right corner where it gets steeper, and on the steeper wall right behind the front desk. That would make my enjoyment much better and my review higher. Thank you.

I had the most amazing experience at the Millcreek Momentum! And it’s all because of Trevor.TLDR: Trevor was helpful and knowledgeable, he explained why my shoes didn’t fit and were painful, made educated recommendations on other models, and even gave me a pair of his to use!Full Review: I have just gotten back into climbing/bouldering, and bought some brand new shoes of FB marketplace, knowing nothing about them. True to my size, but to say they were tight is an understatement. However, I don’t know much about climbing gear so I figured they just needed to break in a bit… fast forward 1 minute into bouldering at Millcreek Momentum and I was in so much pain! I popped over to the front desk to grab a rental pair, cause there was no way I was ending my climbing session early. That’s when Trevor comes in, I said “Can I ask you how I know if my shoes are right for me?” And that’s all it took, he answered all my questions, as a self-proclaimed “shoe nerd”, explained why the shoes I bought were actually not very well liked in the climbing community, how they had been discontinued, and even proceeded to show me other brands and models that would be best suited for my climbing abilities. He told me all about Demo Nights at Momentum and recommended I come. But his 10/10 service doesn’t stop there! His next brilliant idea! He wears a size 10, and because of the type of shoe he likes and climbing he does, he often wears a 39.5 (W8) in climbing shoes. He offered for me to try a pair of his shoes for the day “if that’s not too weird of course”… but I was willing to try anything. After seeing how well they fit and how much more fun I was having he told me to keep the shoes!!! I pleaded with him “are you sure” and he never hesitated. Not only did I get a “new” pair of shoes, I made a new friend and enjoyed a fantastic night of bouldering. Thanks again Trevor, you can’t imagine how much of an impact your excellent customer service made. You deserve a promotion!

This was a GREAT and ENGAGING experience! The thrill of climbing so high on the 40ft wall, only then to look down and see how small my friends are, was truly exhilarating! The facility is so great, spacious, has a gym available for exercises to help warm you up for what's to come, or you can just exercise there! They have equipment and supplies ready for usage there, and you leave there feeling like you accomplished something great! I can't wait to get a membership here!

If you are addicted to toxic relationships, this is the gym for you. If you like it when your friends don't show up when they say they will, when they'll drop plans with you to spend time with the cooler friend or when they'll take the things you've given them and give them away to a casual acquaintance, you have found your indoor climbing gym.

26$ for a day pass is just ridiculous. For two people you’re paying over 50 dollars just to boulder.. I’ve had memberships in the past and that’s definitely cheaper, but this season I was working/skiing too much to pay for a monthly membership. But now I feel priced out of drop in day passes. Pretty disappointing, lower your day pass prices please!

I've been a member with Momentum for over a year now, and here are my findings and opinions about the Momentum in Millcreek. MoMilly offers its members a unique experience with steep overhanging sport routes, a diverse training area and environment with boards & a weight gym with the chance to see "Instagram influencers" and pros regularly. However, due to its popularity, coupled with the lack of options for SLC locals to rope climb indoors, you'll find it almost impossible to get a parking spot near the gym during the busier hours. Once you make it inside, you'll search even longer for a warm up that isn't currently being climbed. Surprisingly the chalked up/greasy holds are not the worst I have seen for the amount of traffic the popular routes get, but they aren't in great condition either. Another rad feature of this gym's environment are the plethora of clinics it provides to customers. Unfortunately these clinics often take up climbing wall space and many parking spots away from members that result in inexperienced climbers and children running around the gym and new climbers climbing dangerously. I do think the staff could do better correcting the shenanigan's that sometimes occurs here. It would be cool to see the gym get autobelays as there is ample space for some to be installed. As a longtime member it does feel that the Millcreek location caters more to non members which is frustrating at times but is made up for when Whippers and Waffles comes around. Personally I think this gym could have better member perks like member parking, lucrative shop discounts, and better member-only hours to name a few of the top of my head. Now I know this is a climbing "gym" and that there is an REI and IME around the same shopping center but the "shop" currently in the gym is super lame and has so much potential to benefit its members and even non members. Momentum Indoor Climbing Millcreek does many things right yet there is still room for improvement. 4/5 stars because I think the Sandy location does it better.

This place is ridiculous. It's huge not only in square footage but also height. The variety of routes is staggering. We go to a few indoor gyms around LA, but they don't hold a candle to this. I'm a momentum member. I mostly climb at the MillCreek & Sandy location. I was really disappointed to hear that you can't borrow chalk as a member there. At the MillCreek & Sandy location you can borrow chalk.I happened to be in the Lehi area and wanted to climb, but didn't have my gear with me. I refuse to pay for chalk when it should be available for members to borrow.I asked the front desk why they don't let members borrow chalk & their answer was because they sell chalk there. Yet, Millcreek also sells chalk & they let member borrow chalk.

Awesome gym with incredible staff. Tons of climbing of each type (lead, top rope, and bouldering) at a variety of difficulty levels, friendly and knowledgeable employees, clean facility. The route setting is excellent - flows well and has lots of variety. Highly recommend.

We currently have our child enrolled in the Mo Mini Seasonal Program. Our little one loves climbing and has conquered beginner and intermediate walls 40-50 feet in height. He understands the mechanics behind abseiling. The past couple of times he has lost interest and in regressing because of being placed in less advanced groups of kids. You’re only “guaranteed” two short climbs (3 minutes each) in the hour class and the staff changes every week with no consistency in coaching techniques. We’ve made an effort to provide feedback at the beginning of each session to help the staff remember his capabilities and hopefully place him in a group that can help further him along. We’re stuck and pot committed as there are no refunds. My recommendation would be to do more due diligence, research and ask questions before signing up for twelve sessions.

Staff is awesome, very clean gym, always a new route to climb, easy to find belay partners, fun and encouraging atmosphere. Right now the holds are getting a bit greasy, they need to switch out some old routes and clean the holds but other than that it's 10/10

Momentum is a very clean and great climbing gym. It was mine and my sisters first time here. However the customer service is horrible. Everyone up at the front desk was very rude and not easy to talk to and not helpful in anyway. When we would ask questions or when we asked if we could certify in belaying, only after we had been here for 15 minutes, so our brothers didn’t have to do it the whole time like we initially planned to, they were very very rude and told us they won’t do it even though they were sitting there not helping out anyone and just chatting.

Whoever you are Jake J, thank you for this incredibly fun route that seems so outdoorsy. Such a treat to climb routes that have been well thought out.Stems, palm press, jams, dihedral … quite dirty as it’s been up since May.We flew into Utah and climbed the next day so definitely felt the elevation/ attitude when running up the walls. The cave have some absolute insane cool routes that range from 5.12s up to 14s. The setting is very good. One of our fave gyms whenever visiting.**ps: Would have been nice if you guys offered the out of town competitors a break for their warm up days.

Absolutely insanely tall sport climb walls and huge bouldering section. Probably the biggest climbing wall I’ve ever seen, indoor or out. Routes are great and the variety is amazing. Even comes with a full gym with squat racks, dumbbells up to 100lbs, etc. Would highly recommend, you can’t get better value anywhere else.

I do wish Lehi had a rope area, but for what it is, it checks every box. Fun, creative sets in all styles, a good workout area, and a small shop. Palmer sets comp boulders for us nasty team kids, but everyone should try them. My favorite part about Lehi though is the staff. I was injured at the gym and the staff were the most kind and caring people, getting me ice, chips and guac, a chair, and everything I could need. I couldn’t find his name, but one fellow stuck with me and reassured me while my coach had to leave. All in all, great gym and totally recommend

There is a great deal of variety climbing at Momentum from bouldering to lead climbing. Unlike other climbing gyms in the area I always feel welcome by people at the gym and easily strike up conversations with strangers who are stoked just to be there having a good time. The weight lifting areas and yoga classes are sub optimal such that if those things are your priority or you want to get very serious about your training you may run into issues. Also, it is not unexpected given the current economy but prices are on the rise despite them not yet finishing the Millcreek gym update two years after starting the updates.

I’ve been going to Momentum here at millcreek for a while and I love it here! They have many classes which is great to learn new stuff. Recently I finished the lead climbing course and the instructor was very helpful and it seemed like he knew what he was doing, which is exactly what you want when a rope is your lifeline. Anyways I highly recommend the place, they have a bunch of climbing terrain that will definitely help you improve!

12 years at Momentum. We've watched growth and change.I know I am hardly alone when I say that we really, really wish their U11 youth programs had 1x weekly and/or seasonal options beyond level 1. PLEASE? There's now a little generation of kids like ours who've grown up in the gym who are not novice climbers and want access to a more sophisticated class/cohort yet also want balance with school, outdoor climbing, and other pursuits. The requirement of 2x+ per week the entire year with no real breaks and no make-up classes for absences starting at age 7 in order to ever participate beyond level 1 is such a bummer.

This gym is fantastic. The first thing you notice when walking in is the scale of the massive lead climbing wall they have. The routes are always fun and the bouldering wall allows you to practice a wide variety of climbing skills.Currently they have a special deal- $39 for 2 weeks of rentals and a membership. I highly recommend it for anyone considering climbing as a new hobby! If you plan on top rope climbing, you’ll need to have a belay certification. The two week membership includes a free belay class so you can belay your friends! At momentum you’ll find-Bouldering-Top Rope-Lead climbing-Speed climbing wall-Free weight gym-Yoga classesAll in all, the membership is entirely worth it if you’re looking for a new climbing gym! Routes are changed frequently and I appreciate the range of climbing levels they cater to. I started climbing at this gym and am grateful I did! Staff is super helpful and friendly and I’ve always felt comfortable asking questions whenever I need.Climbing classes and youth camps are also offered. I should also note that every climber you meet here is super friendly!Overall, Momentum is a great climbing gym for advanced and beginner climbers alike- come climb with us!

Could use more 5.9s/10as but the routes are challenging and fun. Clean, expansive but also EXPENSIVE!! Wish there were better deals for the average Joe to climb. Maybe a weekday/midday pass option?I like that they've added more equipment to the gym it just feels super dirty. I wonder if anyone ever gets up there to clean it. Love the new yoga room but was a bit frustrated with the calendar listings. The postings are not reliable. Say that there's a class and you get there and no one's there. I did mention this to the front desk staff and they told me look into it.

This is a great place to go climbing. The staff are great too! The routes are switched out regularly. There are also expiration dates on the routes which is super helpful if you have a project you're working.Momentum has multiple gyms and if you have a membership, it works at all locations, meaning no additional fees are charged if you use another gym.

It's a good gym. A day pass is $20 and the facilities are clean. The route setting is good and it's a bit on the softer side. I'd say a V5 here would be a V3 or V4 in my gym (Planet Granite Sunnyvale). I had difficulty breathing because Salt Lake City is at 4000 ft elevation but we all know having enough air is aid.

These gyms are big and have lots of climbable area but they are incredibly packed during the rush hours. So much so that sometimes you have to wait a good chunk of time to get back on a wall. If you prefer to climb very early or late this place is wonderful. There is some fitness equipment at every location but not anything like a full gym. Overall not bad and not bad excellent.

I love momentum and being a member there. The Climbing, staff, and community are all great. I climb and lift weights there. They are great for families and climbers of all levels. My complaints are that I wish they opened early on Sunday in Sandy. I also get frustrated when they close half of the gym for competitions and don’t provide members any compensation for the disruption.

Visited my friends in Salt Lake City and they took me to their climbing gym. I don't climb often but love when I do and this was a great experience. The top rope climbing walls are so tall! I looked down as I was most of the way up and was not prepared for that view. It makes your climbs even more fulfilling. An adult day pass cost $20 plus $9 for shoes and harness. My friends have the membership and get great value out of it ($70 month). There was plenty of bouldering and gym options as well. Plus, you're right next to an REI! Can't beat that value.

I really enjoyed my day here. The staff was very friendly and helpful in orienting me. I have been before, but it was about 4 years ago, and I came with a group that was new to the place. We were in Salt Lake City visiting. We have three young girls ages 11,8 and 5 years. They were new to this experience, so we didn't know what to expect. The team welcomed us, gave us great instructions, taught them how to fall off the wall properly, and encouraged them to have fun. It was amazing, We went twice while we were visiting. Thank you so much for the great experience. We will definitely be back. I would highly recommend this place. There's so much to do, and so many levels of climbing.

I'm fairly new to climbing. I used to go only once or twice a month when I lived in CA, but I have been loving Momentum so much, I got a membership so I can go several times a week! I feel like my climbing skills have improved just with praactice, but I'm taking a class next week to take it to the next level hopefully! The staff here is always helpful and professional, and they do a great job keeping the place clean.

First time taking my kids here to climb. They loved it and had so much fun, what turned out to be there for just an hour turned into 3 in a half hours. They have the cutest kids corner canyon, with all these different shapes of rocks to grab. Very bright and colorful, we are planning our next trip here again!

I think the only cool things about this gym is the overhang on the lead climbing and the bouldering section. But, the holds need cleaned, there is way too much chalk on them where it is slippery when you climb. They don't let you use the speed wall even if you have experience, they say the auto belay is dangerous when they don't even have a safe way to clip it in. You have to be certified to go on the speed wall at this gym which doesn't make any sense, because other gyms allow it. The last thing is the staff. They don't greet you when you walk in and they don't give a lot of information about rock climbing.

A paradigm shift in personal fitness. Your standard customer might make note of Momentum's high-traction wall surfaces or emphasize route variety as representative of a well-designed and maintained indoor climbing gym. But what really impresses me is how Momentum stands at the nexus of local culture, personal fitness and modern sport climbing.

Absolutely disgusted with you. It makes no sense to force people to wear a mask while working out. You are a gym and we have the right to oxygen.Your manager Chris Healey got in my face to tell me to put on a mask when no one else was around me and I was simply picking up my child and I was trying to keep a distance with people.I have video recordings of other climbers in your gym while I was there who were improperly wearing masks yet, you harass me and kick me out like I’m some criminal. You’ve officially lost another customer and I am spreading the word about this.
