What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

If you get noise induced migraines this is not the place for you. The music volume is almost as loud as at a club. Even with headphones you can feel the music throbbing into your skull. I don’t know why a rock climbing gym is going for a club vibe. This was a place I would have gotten a membership for but the way they don’t care about people who suffer from migraines with the music volume being so high makes it a definite no for me.

Writing this review in response to all the recent complaints. The gym had a leak that caused the need for parts of the gym to close to replace the mats. I'm not sure why the AC is out but it is... this isn't ideal! It sucks but this isn't the gyms fault and I wouldn't leave a bad review as it is.Replacing all the mats and fixing the AC I'm sure have come at a great cost. The employees are awesome, the gym is huge with fun and challenging routes. I wouldn't blame the gym for experiencing some bad luck

This gym has been without functioning AC for the entire summer of 2024. I would wait until the weather cools down before visiting. An additional downside to the heat is that the gym smells like a sweaty locker room.Management has not explained what the issue is, and it’s unclear why the issue has persisted for so long during the hottest part of the year. Management says that they have been in “constant communication” with their HVAC company, but this communication still hasn’t translated into a functional AC system and more reasonable temperatures.Momentum has not maintained the Silver Street location and it is no longer on par with other modern gyms or the $84/mo price tag. A new bouldering gym is under construction about 10 minutes away, scheduled for completion in 2025.On the plus side, bouldering is a good activity and gym also has cardio and weightlifting equipment.

I've been going here for years. Normally its a great gym but there are MAJOR issues right now:- Its way too hot in the gym (broken AC)- Most of the gym has been closed for months (mat repairs)- No compensation for these issues even though its been months (no one cares about a tiny bit of members only hours)If there was another good gym option I would have canceled already, and Crux is opening a new climbing gym in Houston soon.I understand these things are out of your control but you really should either discount members during this time, or at least give them free punch/guest passes that don't expire. Its a pretty terrible experience right now and almost everyone I know has already cancelled their memberships because of it.

Had I not received an email asking for a review I wouldn’t do this, but here we are.Unfortunately I’m not very happy with what overall seems to be a corporate issue. I do believe the local staff is doing their best and likely working often to their maximum capacity.Though communication has significantly improved as time has passed with the issues we’re currently experiencing, I was generally unhappy as the problems first unfolded as I felt the response in communication was subpar.Currently, things I can point out other than the obvious is the need for general upkeep in the weight room and at minimum address that we do have an issue with cool water coming out of the water fountains. The gym is expensive and is a top performer in momentum’s organization and it has been continuously obvious that corporate prioritizes dollars over the users time and time again.I wrote this in the most objective way possible and hope for better times ahead. I do think the gym was good and look forward to things changing.

The place is great for bouldering. However, the lack of AC in 95F plus heat makes for a miserable experience. I was a first time visitor so I was looking forward to check it out, but I will think twice about visiting in the summer until this AC issue is fixed. Maybe call before visiting to see if the AC is working?

When I first joined Momentum, it was everything a climber could ask for—a clean, spacious environment with challenging and well-thought-out routes. It was a haven for those looking to push their limits and enjoy the sport. However, the last three months have painted a different picture. The air conditioning has been consistently out of order, leaving members to climb in oppressive 90°F heat. What was once an enjoyable workout has turned into a grueling, sweaty ordeal. The lack of competition seems to have bred complacency. Why fix what’s broken when there’s no one else to turn to?The result? Overcrowded, stifling conditions that have turned the gym from a climber’s paradise into an uncomfortable sauna. My disappointment has grown with each visit, and I’m now seriously considering canceling my membership.Momentum, you can do better. Your members deserve more.

Updated August 2024: had to come back to edit the rating due to the condition of SST, which has always been quite crowded, dirty, and equipment not really kept UTD/in good working condition but the past few months has been horrendous. Listen, I LOVE silver st. The setters are fantastic, the members are lovely, the staff is kind, and the location is stellar. However, there has always been very poor management. This is not a new issue. There is just a lot of backlash right now because the issues have gotten to a point that they can't be ignored by the diehard fans of momentum anymore (no AC when it's 100° out in a metal warehouse-ish building, half the gym closed for 2+ mo). Both of these problems should've been handled better; management should've been more transparent with timeline AND gotten with a different HVAC company. This summer is not the first summer that the HVAC has had problems. The AC problem has been off and on for years. Clearly there is a bigger problem with it and the current HVAC company is not cutting it.The gym being half closed was unavoidable, BUT management has done absolutely nothing for members. At the VERY LEAST they should be limiting evening hours (3pm-close) to members only. I'd even go a step further and say that they should also be discounting memberships and/or crediting back some money to the prepaid members. Under no circumstances should a gym be allowed to get to a point where there is a LINE to do a climb. On top of all of this, the gym is dirtier than it's ever been. Don't get me wrong, it's always been dirty (pretty nasty walls, stained and stinky bench mats, clumps of hair and dustbunnies especially in the weight room, 1-2 musty wet rags to wipe equipment, cardio machines always on the fritz, unusable shreds of barbell pads, etc.) but with the increased foot traffic in such a TINY space for hundreds of people every single day it's gotten really gross. I have to sweep/blow out my own little square of floor if I do any floor exercises and bring my own barbell pad. The same clump of hair sat by one of the lifting benches for at least 5 days. All of this could be SOOO easily remedied by replacing some of the ancient pads/equipment, keeping the single use disinfecting wipes stocked, and just sweeping/vacuuming *thoroughly* once a day. For the premium price of $84/mo per member, this is a teeny tiny ask that shouldn't even have to be asked for. Nothing about SST feels worth $84, and I would not have a membership without the prepaid discount.I still go to Momentum quite often despite these issues because I don't have a regular gym membership, and right now climbing is the majority chunk of my life, but it has gotten to a point where I feel like management is purposely overlooking all the issues with SST because they know members have no other choice. SST has the market cornered (for now) and management has fully taken advantage of it's members because they know that they can.Updated July 2023: Looove the routesetting here compared to the other gyms we've tried while traveling. Super unique and well thought out usually!! The only downfall of this location is the walls/holds are pretty dirty due to the amount of traffic they get. Wish momentum would open another innerloop TR/lead/boulder gym combo like Katy to help with how many members there are. The other qualm is they took down the paper towel dispenser in the cardio room and just want you to wipe down the machines with drenched dirty cloths that are reused by everyone.

NEW UPDATE - AC working again and more of the gym is opening up. Cant go back to 5 stars tho due to all these issues.UPDATE - Been climbing here for 4+ years. Half the gym isn't available but that's not their fault so can't complain. However, the AC has been pretty terrible since April or earlier. It seems to always have issues during the summer. I can think of at least 2 summers where it was barely working. I pre-paid for the whole year so I still go but will definitely be looking at Crux when they open.OLD Review:Haven't been to other bouldering gyms but this one is great. Started climbing here and I go pretty often. The staff are friendly and helpful. The problems get reset at a good pace. They offer yoga and have a regular gym too. It does tend to get kinda dirty but there's just so many people that come that it's unavoidable.

I've been a member of Momentum Silver Street for 4 years now, paying around $100 per month. Unfortunately, the quality of my gym has severely deteriorated to the point I can no longer stay silent. For the past two months, the gym has had no air conditioning, making it extremely uncomfortable to climb. With no sign of it being fixed, it's clear that courtesy and comfort is not a priority for members. Additionally, 2/3 of the gym has been closed due to flooding for several months, significantly reducing the available climbing space and overcrowding the usable space.Despite these major issues, there has been no communication from management about any timeline for repairs or compensation for the inconvenience. It’s frustrating to pay a premium price for such a subpar experience. The icing on the cupcake for me is the decision to bring back the 2016 moonboard above the brand-new 2024 setup. To my knowledge there was no request for feedback on what the members thought/wanted. Candidly, this felt like a decision made by someone who doesn’t use the moonboard, and a middle finger to the climbers who consistently train on it.I had high hopes for this gym, but the lack of basic facilities and poor management response have left me deeply disappointed. I cannot recommend this gym to anyone until these issues are addressed. Save your money and wait for Crux’s grand opening in 2025.

One of the largest gyms I've been to so far! Lots of variety and the grading felt reasonable. The gym area (weights, machines, hangboards etc) was roomy and had plenty of equipment despite there being many people. Only took off a star because many parts of the gym were closed but that's alright

This is probably my most favorite bouldering gym because it offers the most variety of climbs. Say if you have a finger injury, you can work on balance/slabby climbs, if you want to work your back, you can climb overhangs . You can climb jubs or more finger intensive climbs. Gym is huge and clean and offers weights, pullup bars, etc.

Having traveled & visited several different gyms, this one is especially disappointing, because it has such untapped potential to be a great gym (excellent facility, tons of space, good holds), but management / staff are holding it back from reaching its potential.* Day pass + shoe rentals are very expensive, compared to much better gyms (such as Austin Bouldering Project and Crux). It would be fine if this gym were better, but it's so much worse.* Looking at fitness class schedule over the next 2 months, there are only classes 4 days out of the week, with a total of 6 classes across the whole week. Compare this to ABP, where there are typically 10+ classes per day.* Let's talk route resetting. Having come in multiple times over the past 18 months, on multiple occasions I've come back 2-3 months apart & seen many of the same routes up across visits. This wouldn't really be that upsetting if the staff were honest about it, but they say it's "impossible" that that would happen as they reset routes "every six weeks, without fail". They told me this again today, when I could literally walk to the back of the gym and see at least 20 routes that were up from 8 weeks ago (Easter weekend).tl;dr: this is still unfortunately the best gym in Houston proper right now, though hopefully some competition will open up to fill the void.

Rock climbing is a cool activity and I definitely recommend going with a friend. They have the option of bringing a friend in for free and that is especially amazing because the membership is quite expensive in this economy. After over a year of membership I'd say there are major improvements needed in maintaining and developing routes for the steep price. Most routes under v3 are greasy and stagnant. The monthly prices are ridiculous for a climbing gym that lacks a modern weight gym facility, they don't even offer an assisted pullup station. On the plus side, the Staff is friendly, community is polite, and parking isn't usually an issue. Weekends are actually very calm and not busy unless there is a big birthday party for some kids.

Exceptional bouldering gym! With one major drawback...no top rope/lead/auto belay.Found this gym to be really well organized, clean and friendly. Parking was super easy and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Route setting seemed to be somewhat soft and then there was a big jump from V6 to V7. Some really cool top out boulders where you climb up and over the top of the wall on some sections. Really nice spacious workout area with plenty of finger training boards and campus boards. Also a splatter wall. Although there was no moon board or kilter board. Most modern boulder gyms have those by now. A great training tool.Lockers and open cubbies for bags/gear. Also a nice seating space on the first and second level for hanging out or to whip out a laptop and get some work done.

Incredible bouldering gym in Houston. Pretty close to downtown, and there are probably hundreds of routes. There's a good balance of boulders of all difficulties, and you never really need to wait more than a few minutes to climb a specific boulder. $22 for an all day pass and shoes are $6. Lots of areas to fill your water bottle, and people are all really nice. Would definitely recommend.

I’ve been a member of Momentum for almost a year now. The employees are always so welcoming and helpful and there’s an awesome variety of walls/puzzles. They also have a gym with good weightlifting equipment and an upstairs cardio room.

Beyond awesome. Just being there puts me in a great mood. It’s kinda like accidental exercise.I just wanted to add more praise for Momentum. I've been climbing here for about a year now. The route setters are non-stop setting new routes that are creative and challenging to climb. These new routes always cater to all levels of climbing ability. As for cleanliness of holds, the traffic over these routes is high, because climbers are inspired to climb them, and there are many climbers. Both of these reasons speak to the joy climbers have in this gym...and the climbers are one of the best aspects of this gym, it's a great social community. There was a negative comment about cleanliness and I would like to say, if you think a hold is dirty, or chalked up, get a brush and clean it. Be helpful, it will make you a happier person. Finally, don't worry that there is a lot of traffic, it's a big gym, and even when there's a lot of people there are always plenty of boulders immediately available.

Never rock climbed before, was invited by friends and did better than I thought I would! Fun way to get or stay in shape all while facing a fear of falling/heights ? Very kind, jovial staff. Cool place!

Love this gym! Wonderful group of people. The space is great, they change the routes often to keep it fresh, and work to be more inclusive as I am an amputee who climbs here. They have fun little events often and the staff us so knowledgeable and willing to help.My daughter loves kids Canyon too. She came for rock climbing camp and loved every day of it.

I absolutely love it here. It’s a great climbing gym with a large variety of routes for all different skill types. It’s also nice that they have an full gym aside from climbing if you’re in the mood for a more well rounded workout.

This place is amazing! Every staff that talked to me was super nice. All the patrons were super jazzed and nice. It was just a great energy. I was already excited about all the space but then saw the gym and got even more jazzed. Even as the traffic picked up, it never felt "crowded".

What an incredible gym! There are no ropes only boulders but I would say there are more routes than you could get done in weeks!!They also have a super cool world boulder section that really puts what those athletes are doing into perspective.

I love this place. I've been going for a little over a month now regularly. New routes all the time, friendly staff and gym members. I haven't been to yoga or fitness classes yet but they are available. AND they have weights. Great gym.

update 8/1/24: I’ve got to lower my rating because of the gym’s recent state. They had a big leak which caused half of the gym to be unusable. Which is understandable, but it has been months with only half the gym accessible. What is most frustrating is the gyms response… they won’t offer a discount to members, even though members are getting half of what they paid for. I bought a year long membership and there’s no way for me to freeze my membership, so I’m stuck. Plus, the A/C seems to be broken about half the time. I’m seriously considering not renewing my membership after it expires because going to the gym is not a pleasant experience anymore.—-I’ve been a member here for a little less than two months and I love it! It’s a massive climbing gym with lots of different types of climbing routes. Plus they change sections every week which keeps things fresh. They have a good deal for new members where if you buy a pair of shoes and a chalk bag you get your first month free. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Plus they offer classes for beginners. In addition to all the climbing offerings, they also have a weight room and a cardio room!! And they offer workout classes and yoga classes. Truly they have everything. The parking lot can get a little crazy. Just because they’re a popular place 🙂

I may be bit crazy, I am from Tulsa and decided to flight in the morning to Houston to climbing there then flight back later that same day in a couple weeks ago. That’s what I am an adventurer. The gym is mainly bouldering- it’s so many routes so I can able to problem solving to around the gym. I stayed there for about four hours and half to climbing. One of the staffs- greeted me and very friendly. She’s surprised me when she knew some sign language because ASL is my first language. I will never forget that and I had amazing day there! Will come back sometime this fall to climbing there again!

I can't put into words how awesome this place is. This is an amazing gym for bouldering. There are tons of routes with a lot of variety and interest and they reset them ridiculously often. There is something for every skill level. I started climbing here about a year ago as a total beginner and the easiest routes were a challenge. Now I've moved up a bit, but I am never bored here. I can always find a project with just the right amount of challenge. And the people here are so chill and friendly. I never feel judged if I struggle with a problem. I often find I have total strangers cheering me on as I push my own personal limits on a route. Everyone is just happy to chat and share tips or encouragement. If I could live here I would. This is my happy place.

Oh boy. I used to love climbing here. There were always issues - dirty showers and locker rooms, perpetually greasy holds, constantly broken cardio equipment, etc etc. For a while I was able to overlook these things because the energy and vibe were so fun. Also it is the only centrally located climbing gym in Houston so we are somewhat captive to it.The last few months though have just been terrible. Obviously the water main break that flooded part of the gym is not the fault of Momentum. There are some things you just can’t control. However, as a paying member, my experience coming here and trying to climb in a half open gym has been awful. It is so so so crowded now no matter what time you go. And even worse, it is summer, so the crowds are typically people using day passes. Now, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this, as everyone should have the option to try climbing. BUT. It is quite frustrating to try and seriously work on problems when there is a group of 17 year old boys hopping on routes that intersect yours or a 5 year old running around in your fall zone. The staff here does absolutely NOTHING to enforce the standard rules and etiquette of a climbing gym. And I’m tired of it.The most frustrating part is probably the lack of compensation for members. Yes, it costs the same to operate the gym, but this stance of the gym shows a complete lack of value and care for the people who keep them running. If YOUR MOST LOYAL CUSTOMERS ARE MISERABLE the least you could do is cut us a break. Because I am definitely not getting my money’s worth right now. Give members a discount for a couple months and bump up the cost for guest passes. And no, the extra two hours on Sunday aren’t enough. The last thing I will say is that if I lived farther out I would probably switch to Inspire by now. But I might freeze or cancel because at this point I don’t know if it’s really worth it.

it's my first time rock climbing without a harness and i thought only professionals do it like that so i was lowkey scared that i wont be able to climb anything.from entering this place to the end, it was such a great experience. the staffs were welcoming and friendly. they explained everything for the first timers and my friends guided me through so that was helpful.i was able to accomplish some of the purple ones which i am super proud of. i enjoyed learning new things such as: how there is a special shoe you need to rent and the chalk thing on your palms. and the steep slope thingy, an area to start from and how there are parts you go over the rock etc. the color coded rocks, i thought you could step on any rock loloverall i would come back here. such a fun place to get your workout and to hangout with friends. i got calluses on my palm and thankfully the front had bandaids. parking is crowded but super spread out so you still can park without any hassle.

idk why this gym has 4.9 stars. Don't get me wrong its a nice gym size wise and variations of the climb. However it is by far one of the dirtiest gym I have ever been in. Almost every foothold was more slippery then a slip and slide. Multiple holds lost there color and were just covered in plastic from the shoes. I wanted to like this gym because of the size and variety but sadly I cannot recommend anyone who wants to enjoy a gym without a high chance of getting injured or just having to campus everything which if you are into then this is your gym. I know a lot of people like the less gripper hold and I have no issues with that, but I found this gym is even slipper than outside climbing which I have done a good bit now. Overall I think if this gym would actually care about its cleanliness it would be an amazing gym that I would come to but until then is a HARD PASS for me.

GO TO THE YOGA CLASS WITH NATALIE!Trust me you will no regret it. I was lucky enough to have a one on one session with her and she was gentle, charismatic, and funny. She had such a calm energy to her that it made the experience even better than I could have imagined. Idk what shes getting paid but this woman needs a raise. She was so intentional with the way she carries you though the practice and uses essential oils that bring a sense of bliss. 10/10

This place is awesome! My son loves his climbing class. Top quality weight room, great yoga classes and there are plenty of opportunities to climb for people of all skill levels. I also like that the gym is a dedicated bouldering gym so you don’t need any special equipment. Some of the front desk staff could use some training in being a little nicer to newbies and people with questions but otherwise a top notch facility. Full disclosure…my family has a membership here.

This could be a lot better — don‘t get why it has a 4.9 currently! The problems are fine and well-set, but the holds are extremely greasy. I have never seen anything like it in the US. Even jugs become friction dependent here because they‘re so full of rubber and chalk!Other than that, the area is huge and there are lots of people on weeknights, which is cool. Staff is super friendly and there‘s even a bike parking rack inside.

I always enjoy going to momentum...even though I have a fear of heights and rarely actually climb all the way up. Just getting halfway is still a work out. I had a membership for a year and went three times a week they change most of their boulders every week which makes it still entertaining and challenging to do. The staff is pretty friendly and their gym section while not large offers enough to get a proper stretch and workout. Even though I had to cancel my membership due to life as soon as it's feesible I will renew it because I enjoy going so much. It's also a really fun activity to do with friends and sometimes they offer discounts for it.

Great facility, staff, & overall amazing experience! Thank you Sang! She helped me out with explanations and orientation. I had originally Purchased a groupon for single all day boulder climbing w/shoe rental for $9.23. The professionalism and customer service is amazing. This is an incredible facility with so much to offer.Bouldering, yoga, full gym, showers, locker room. definitely state of the art facility! It was a bit overwhelming to begin because there are so many places to start. Just pick a point and start, don’t forget have fun! Once you only focus on your line the experience turns into a real journey.

Hands down favorite climbing gym! With such a large space there is always and they are always updating the routes so you always have a new challenge. Great classes whether its learning to climb or advancing your skill set. They offer kids climbing classes as well as a kid friendly area. But they also offer a full gym set up as well as classes. They have also started up their yoga program again. This place has it all. What makes it the best? If I haven't convinced you yet, not only are the staff are all so friendly and helpful, but so are the members. Great atmosphere and just a fantastic way to spend an hour or three.

Love momentum, routes are challenging and helps builds skills and technique. Just wished they would clean their rocks more and also rotate and change up their walls. The back wall has been there for almost 3 months now. Other than that, great place for climbing, a lot of variety in walls! Workers are so kind and caring, communicate well, and are prepped and ready to help beginner climbers.
