What's the Difference Between Bouldering / Top Rope / Lead Climbing?
Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.
Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.
Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.
- Please note:
- Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Fort Union, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering. - We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.
- Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING…

As well as 27 $ for a day pass?
The facility is dirty, the holds are old and a lot of them don’t have friction.
It used to be my favorite gym to stop at when passing thru SLC.
Corporate conglomerates are ruining the soul of climbing.
Where’s the passion? Where’s the love?
The staff are all friendly and the place is always clean.
Highly recommend!
Managing expectations through early and frequent communication is ideal for reducing heartache.
For the past month, bouldering routes have only been reset one time out of four. No communication went out to members, which would have allowed for updating daily gym plans. Instead we were left asking questions to the staff, who also weren't communicated with and didn't know why this was happening.
Expectations of a Climbing Gym:
Knowledgeable Staff
Clean Facilities
Seating and Brushes for Cleaning Holds in Every Area
New Routes Set Weekly
Extensive Workout Equipment for Development
Fair/Reasonable Rates
Communication
PRIOR:
Bare minimum customer care and improvements. Yearly increases in membership rates are non-justifiable and lack explanation.
How about hourly maybe for 10 bucks? I dont have 25$ a day to climb. Robbery. I also dont have a car payment (pre 2020) to pay per month either. 150 a month plus fees just for me and my boy to climb for 45 minutes before burn out. .
Problem setting is good.
Community is good.
Everything is always clean.
Workout equipment is good.
5/5.
We love momentum! I definitely do wish there was rope climbing here, so we just have to plan ahead and go to Sandy if we'd rather that type of climbing. That being said, it's super fun how LARGE of a bouldering gym this is and the super unique bulge in the middle. There's so many different styles of climbing manifested here. We also love how chill the environment and (most) employees are, we bring our babies and just set them up in a pack n play while we climb and everyone is cool with it.
The only thing we don't like about Momentum is it does cost more than the Quarry (where I started climbing), and Momentum has way less member benefits than the Quarry, especially now that they got rid of free friend first Saturday. Just seems a bit backwards to pay more and get less benefits.
Every Tuesday they change one of their many walls, so it feels fresh and never really goes stale.
The workers here are good people! Each of them are friendly and approachable.
I've been climbing here for about 3 years now and do not plan on stopping!
On their first day they were able to do the first and second levels.
The levels go all the way up to level 15, and anything over 5 looks pretty crazy, so plenty of room for growth.
Bring chalk, you'll need it for your hands.
- The bathrooms are usually not very clean, especially the showers. The sandy gym I think is the worst. For how expensive the membership is I feel like reasonable to expect the bathrooms and showers to be kept at a higher standard of cleanliness.
- The staff are generally super friendly and nice. The only bad experience I’ve had was with one of the rout setters. I’ve seen him snap at climbers on multiple occasions. I just avoid him whenever I see him there. It almost seems like he’s looking for people to yell at.
- last is just the price. It’s really expensive… but that’s climbing for ya. I do like the discounts you get on gear at the Lehi gym. It’s pretty good! But yeah, if you get a membership just make sure you plan on using it a lot to make it worth it.
service she got me hooked up with a 40$ 2 week trial! What a steal! It made it so 1 of my cousins could get in free! Well we where there I saw Amber going around making sure everyone was having a good time, she even took a few videos and pictures for us while we climbed. What an excellent employee I hope to see her when we come back! (Because we definitely will be back)
The walls were clearly marked and ranked from easy to hard. A lot of upper body and core strength is needed for the more difficult climbs. They do have a mini gym section with a bench and bars.
The gym area is pretty small compared to their other locations.
I also love all of the boulders and how frequently they are switched out as it always keeps things interesting and keeps me coming back for more.
There are always new people to meet and new things to try. Stay strong and improve the quality of your life.
