How to Climb 5.10+

There’s a reason why 5.10 is the first grade split into A/B/C/D. This grade, once thought impossible by early climbers, requires more than  just strength and will to master. At 5.10, you are no longer climbing beginner routes.  These climbs require route reading, technical skill, and body awareness on the wall.

This 2 hour class will show you some tools to become confident on these more technical routes.

This class is recommended for anyone currently climbing 5.9 – 5.11a

BOULDERING LEAGUE

Bouldering League

What is Boulder League anyways?
Momentum Bouldering League is a fun focused league for members to team up and earn points together. It is a chance to climb with friends and improve personal climbing and just have fun with a smidge of competition. Climbers of all abilities are welcome to participate. We use a handicap system so that anyone can compete, no matter how hard you climb.

How it works:
Every week climbers will climb at the gym of their choice. Using the Kaya Climb app, climbers will log the boulders that they complete. You score points based on climbing the new set. Climbers have 7 days to get the most points as possible on the new set, until the next set comes out. Kaya will reflect not only your team’s score but your individual score as well, which will be made up of each member’s top 3 routes completed each week. At the end of 7 weeks, there will be a raffle with tons of awesome swag. The winners will get glory and bragging rights until the next league!

Scoring & Ranking:
Boulder Problem Points – Using the V-Max Handicap System
Setting your V-Max: Think of the highest grade you have been able to complete recently with some regularity. That will be your “Max V”. Your points are then derived from that baseline. Teams will have a weekly and a Total score. The weekly team score is an average of the score of all the team members and drops the lowest score. The total team score is a sum of every weekly score.

V-MAX Climbed v0 Climbed v1 Climbed v2 Climbed v3 Climbed v4 Climbed v5 Climbed v6 Climbed v7 Climbed v8 Climbed V9 Climbed V10 Climbed V11
V1 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 140 pts
V2 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 140 pts
V3 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 140 pts
V4 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 140 pts
V5 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 140 pts
V6 0 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 160 pts
V7 0 0 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 160 pts
V8 0 0 0 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 160 pts
V9 0 0 0 0 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 120 pts 160 pts
V10 0 0 0 0 0 0 20 pts 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 140 pts
V11 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 40 pts 60 pts 80 pts 100 pts 140 pts

<
Example: a V5 climber who climbs a V5 receives 100 points, if they climb a V4 then they receive 80 points and a V6 would be at 120 points. With the Handicap System, any climber who climbs a boulder that is the same grade as their V-Max will receive 100 points. This allows climbers of all abilities to earn points in equal measure for their team. Our table only goes to two grades above your current V-Max in order to discourage cheating (sandbagging). If you feel you have gotten stronger, you can update your V-Max by speaking to your ABL Facilitator.

DO NOT try sand bagging (low-balling your handicap), you will be caught, and bumped.

FAQ

What's the difference between Bouldering, Top Rope, and Lead Climbing?

Bouldering is climbing up to 15ft (in gym) off the ground without the use of ropes or climbing gear. Pads are provided throughout the bouldering areas and participation in a Safety Orientation is required prior to climbing. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and does not require a partner.

Top Roping is climbing up to 50ft (in gym) on a rope that is already attached to the top of the wall while being belayed by a certified partner below. This type of climbing is available to climbers of any skill level and requires a partner(s). Belay certification is required prior to climbing. Belay Classes are offered daily, visit a location’s “classes” page for more information or to sign up.

Lead Climbing refers to climbing on our full height walls in areas that do not already have a rope attached at the top. Unlike Top Roping, Lead climbers must bring the rope with them as they progress up the wall. Leading is an advanced form of climbing and not recommended until you have a strong Top Rope climbing foundation. Lead Certification is required prior to leading in our gyms. Lead Classes are offered several times a month at our rope gyms, please review the requirements prior to signing up for this class on a location’s “classes” page.

  • Please note:
    • Momentum Lehi, SODO, and Silver Street are Bouldering Only gyms.
Momentum Millcreek, Sandy, and Katy offer both Rope Climbing and Bouldering.
    • We do not allow anyone other than Momentum employees to provide belay instruction inside our gyms.

What does "Belaying" mean?

  • Belaying is a technique climbers use to create friction on a climbing rope so that a falling climber does not fall very far and can be lowered to the ground at a controlled speed when they are done climbing. All Momentum locations with top rope climbing offer belay instruction. Class schedules are available on the “Classes” page of each gym.

How old do I have to be to belay / climb?

  • Bouldering welcomes all ages.
    • Climbers under 12 must have adult supervision at all times.
    • Toddlers – with direct supervision – can boulder in our kids specific areas AND climb our kid-friendly top rope routes.
  • Top Rope belayers must be 12+ years of age. Climbers can be any age.
    • Ropes are provided
  • Lead climbers/belayers must be 14+ years of age.
    • Lead Climbing requires a 35meter rope, certification, and ability to climb (and fall) on a 5.10 test route. Lead ropes are not provided.

Are there kids classes?

We offer an assortment of Youth Programs that start as early as age 3 and go up to age 18.

Class specifics vary, but are designed with a progression format so there are new skills to learn as you advance in both age and/or ability.
